Peter Icarus Pettigrew
”It’s not always rainbows and butterflies."
”It’s not always rainbows and butterflies."
The Character
Name: Peter Icarus Pettigrew
Nicknames: Pete, Wormtail
Birthdate: 15 August
Year: 7th
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Blood Status: Pure
House: Gryffindor
Canon or Original: Canon
The Appearance
Hair: Peter’s hair is a nondescript blonde/brown color, so fundamentally normal that it is almost as if his hair has no color. At the least, it is no color worth noticing.
Face: Peter has always been told he has a rather mouse-like appearance. His eyes are on the small side, and he can commonly be found squinting. He probably should have glasses, but he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with how he sees. Contrastingly, he’s always had large ears. His parents used to say “he’ll grow into them” whenever someone pointed them out, but really, they just grew with him.
Body & Style: Bodily, Peter has thinned out since he hit puberty. He used to be quite overweight, but over the years has grown into himself as he’s grown taller, and now is only slightly overweight. In fact, he’s kind of proud that most of the time you don’t notice that he’s heavier than everyone else. However, he seems to have hit his peak somewhere in 6th year, and has since been gaining weight again. Though he’s grown into his girth, he still isn’t tall. While most of his peers stand around 6’0 or more, Peter is only 5’8” and this leaves him standing at least half a head below the other three Marauders. His shorter height is made even more prominent by his almost perpetual slouch.
Distinguishing Features: Where his hair is a plain, unnoticeable blonde/brown, Peter’s eyes are a very bright blue/gray. They almost look out of place amidst his lackluster hair and pale skin, especially as his eyes tend to be either half-lidded or squinting. The brightness of his eyes just doesn’t match the dull rest of him.
Face Claim: Jamie Bell
The Magic
Wand: Chestnut and Dragon Heartstring, 9.25 inches, brittle.
Mirror of Erised: To be on the top of the proverbial food chain.
Dementor: Everyone he knows gathering around and telling him how worthless he is, how he can never get anything right and will never be successful
Patronus: a rat, but he hasn’t summoned it yet. His happiest memory of being accepted into the Marauders just isn’t doing it for him.
The Personality
Likes:
- Being recognized
- Not losing
- Crackers
- Performing well (which doesn’t happen often)
- Pumpkin pie
Dislikes:
- Always performing the worst
- Being outshone all the time
- Lima beans
- Potions
- Charms
Strengths:
-Peter is basically invisible. Even if he’s not actively hiding, most people just ignore him
-Despite being slow on the uptake, Peter is very observant. If something happens around him, he notices.
-Peter has very sharp eyes and ears, which makes him a really good lookout on marauder adventures.
Weaknesses:
-Peter has very little concern over his own opinions. If someone else has an idea, he will always go along with theirs over one of his own.
-He is shy, which most of the time means that he won’t do something even though he thinks he should, just because it would make him stand out.
-Peter will find the most dominant personality and try his hardest to latch onto them, instead of paving his own path. If the strongest rejects him, he’ll keep going down the ranks until someone takes him.
Plans for the Future: As of right now, Peter just hopes to graduate. Past that he doesn’t know what he wants to do or what job to have, just so long as he graduates.
Personality: Peter is precariously balanced between knowing he’s really not an appealing person, and wishing desperately that he was. Because he knows this, though he won’t readily admit it to anyone, Peter has always tended to find the most dominant personality and associate himself with them. He figures that he’ll become appealing by association, which he considers a step up from unappealing on his own.
As such, Peter’s personality is kind of that he doesn’t have one. He will go along with any plan James or Sirius thinks up. The only time he’ll say anything about the plan is the occasional worry that they will be caught. Despite his willingness to follow the other Marauders to hell and back, he would rather avoid getting detention, if he has a choice.
Besides blindly following the other Marauders, Peter generally tries to be friendly to everyone. Most of the time when James and Sirius are teasing Snape, Peter will just stand nearby. He’s not a very quick thinker, and everything he could think of to say would be a repeat of something someone else said five minutes ago. So, he’ll usually turn into a sentinel, watching for any professors that might be coming. Through his sentinel duties Peter has trained himself to have sharp eyes and ears, but this tends to make him have jerky movements, twitching towards any movement or sound ne noticed.
Peter is generally shy; he won’t go up and talk to people without severe provocation. However, he isn’t afraid to ask for help when he needs it (which is often). It took him a while to learn, but once he realized that he just couldn’t do as well on his own as he does when someone helps him, he’s taken to asking for help frequently, sometimes even when he already knows what he’s doing. Usually he’ll go to Remus, as the he’s most likely to actually help Peter rather than tease him about being slow.
The Background
Family Members:
Charles Pettigrew (41)
Emelia (Matthyson) Pettigrew (40)
Residence: Bosham, England
History: Peter’s parents are not high-standing people. Both their families reside in the bottom on pureblood society, with neither being particularly rich. With the substantial gap between them and the high-class pureblood families (like the Blacks, Malfoys and Lestranges), neither the Matthyson or Pettigrew families had the opportunity to instill the Pureblood Sense of Superiority ™ in their children, as they had to work directly with muggleborns, and sometimes even muggles themselves, and they could not risk their children saying things they shouldn’t. It would lose them business. The two families worked closely together, and it was decided that their children, Charles and Emelia, would be married.
Once they were married, Peter’s parents decided to get themselves out of the family businesses, and moved to the small country town of Bosham. They had nothing against their families, but did not want their way of life to overtake the new couple. After moving, they kept largely to themselves, opening up a small shop in town, and soon Peter was born. Still in an effort to keep their family separated from themselves, Peter only saw his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins at Christmas.
In town, Peter played with the other children, but he often couldn’t keep up. Children like to run a lot, and Peter’s small, overweight body couldn’t perform the same as the other kids. He would always make the effort to play, but soon would come back inside his parents’ shop and help where he could. This is where he would learn to stay quiet and do as he was told.
After Peter started attending Hogwarts, it was evident that he would not have very many friends if he didn’t do something about it. Thus he found James Potter and Sirius Black, the most overpowering personalities in their year. There were also the powerful forms of Lucius Malfoy, Rodolphus Lestrange, and Bellatrix Black, but Peter knew (his parents had told him) that they would already have a network of alliances arranged, and there would most likely be no space for him there (though he should be careful to not do anything that would make them reject him, thus lowering the Pettigrew name even further). So Peter found himself chasing the eventual Marauders, and was soon more or less accepted into their group.
Years passed and Peter managed to achieve adequate grades to keep him advancing to the next year, though his grades have never (and most likely will never) be spectacular. Through the Marauders’ pranks Peter has learned to keep his eyes and ears sharp, to notice if anyone might be coming.
He still gets the feeling that he still doesn’t quite fit in with his peers, but now in his 7th year at Hogwarts, Peter has decided that that’s really not very important. Friends won’t be important after he graduates and finds a job, at least, not the friends from school. He will find new friends within his work, and go from there.
